Ahmad Shabery Hopes SEA Games Will Not Be An Exclusive Event

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 05:48 PM PDT

PUTRAJAYA, April 27 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek hopes the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia from Nov 11-25, will not become an exclusive broadcast rights event, without prior notice.

He said every country must be informed whether broadcast rights are exclusive or otherwise because countries would need at least a year to prepare the budget and find sponsors.

"We do not want to see what happened during the Laos SEA Games in 2009 to repeat itself. In Laos, the organising committee imposed very high broadcast rights at the last minute, forcing many countries to shy away from broadcasting the games.

"Without wide coverage of the games, there will be no highlights of the action in that particular country," he told reporters here.

Ahmad Shabery was commenting on Indonesia's decision to bar media coverage from the Malaysian media, even for the launching of the SEA Games mascot, apparently because they did not have broadcasting rights.

Asked if the matter would be raised top the higher authorities, Ahmad Shabery said an in-depth study was needed to find out who determine the broadcast rights - the Indonesian government or the organizing committee.

"Sometimes the organ sing committee will have a bigger role and authority in terms of broadcast rights than the government. We have to look at it carefully," he said.

Indonesia Choose Komodo Dragon As SEA Games Mascot

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 02:17 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Host for the 26th SEA Games, Indonesia has chosen the Komodo dragon as mascot for the 2011 Games which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang from Nov 11 to 25.

The Indonesia SEA Games Organizing Committee (Inasoc), was qouted by Jakarta Post as saying that a pair of Komodo dragons, a male (Modo) and a female (Modi), were chosen in recognition of the Republic's conservation efforts to protect the dwindling number of the rare lizard.

Modo and Modi were unveiled last night at a function in Jakarta, to mark the 200-day countdown before the games open on Nov 11 in Palembang.

The Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world, only live on the Indonesian islands of Komodo in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara.

On Jan 15, Inasoc unveiled its logo, a Garuda eagle, to symbolize the power and grandeur of Indonesia.

Indonesia dominated the Games between 1977, when it first competed, and 1997, failing to top the medal charts only twice in that period - in Bangkok in 1985 and in Chiang Mai in 1995, losing out to Thailand in both years.

However, Indonesia has not topped the medals chart since winning the Games in 1997 in Jakarta.

CAMBODIAN PARALYMPICS PREPARES FOR SEA GAMES IN - The South East ...

The National Paralympics Committee of Cambodia will send its disabled athletes specializing in athletics, disabled swimming, and seat volleyball to the Southeast
Asia (SEA) Games to be held in Indonesia on 10 December 2011.

Mao Sokchea, Administrative Offi cer of the National Paralympics Committee of Cambodia (N PCC), said that Cambodia has sent the athletes to attend all sorts of games for disabled players since 1999. "Ranking from ASEAN Para Games, Asia Para games, and World Paralympics games we have never missed one of them," he told The Southeast Asia weekly.

Toward the SEA Games in Indonesia at the end of this year, he said the committee will send athletes specializing in Athletics, Swimming, and Seat Volleyball to attend the games. "In addition to the Athletics, Swimming, and Seat Volleyball, there are other specifi c events which fi t to the physical condition of the athletes,
which isn't like the sports for healthy athletes He revealed the concerns andchallenges that crippled Cambodian athletes have in order to defeat other foreign athletes in the SEA Games.

"Basically, we lack professional coaches, rehearsal places, tools, and the budget to support our athletes," he said. "Most of the foreign athletes are warmly supported with salaries to maintain their living standard so that the family can enjoy full concentration on training. But Cambodian athletes, although there is some package supported from the government, their family would starve if they take much of the time on training," he added. The National Paralympics Committee
of Cambodia contains three federations; i.e. Cambodian Disabled Athletic Federation, Cambodian Disabled Swimming Federation, and Cambodian Seat Volleyball Federation with a total of 60 to 90 registered athletes.

Currently, the number of athletes for the three types of sports to be sent for SEA Games is not finalized yet. Cambodian Disabled Athletics Federation's Secretary General Mr. Orn Sok Eng said that so far 12 athletes have already been recruited for seat volleyball, and the other 15 athletes are planned to be recruited on
April 23 for Athletics, while swimming remains unsure yet. "We set high expectation so that Cambodian athletes of Athletics can win more medals from the SEA
Games and bring back to the nation since our athletes have been more professional with this sport," he told The Southeast Asia Weekly on April 21. "Cambodian disabled athletes have long been recognized regionally and globally with Athletics."

It should be remarked that Olympic and Paralympics are identical games wherever there are Olympic games, the Paralympics games will also be there. It is just that the Paralympics games are usually organized shortly after the Olympic games are completed.

There are 15 types of Paralympics sports to be officially recognized as a sport for disabled contestants all over the world; Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Boccia, Chess, Fencing, Wheelchair Basketball, Goal ball, Judo, Power lifting, Shooting, Swimming, and Table Tennis. The National Paralympics Committee of Cambodia (NPCC) which has been chaired by Samdach Prime Minister Hun Sen himself means that the disabled people are not left behind by the society, and the government strongly encourages them to attend the sports as normal people do.

The nation annually hosts the national Paralympics competition on December 3 to remind people about the athletes with disabilities, and to reveal that they are not left behind by the society. Toward further encouragement for active participation by Cambodian disabled athletes into international challenging stages, the government has declared a supporting package award for those athletes receiving medals in Paralympics games in the regional and international sport arenas; the gold medal in SEA Games is awarded 26 million riel (US$ 6,500), gold medal in Asia Games awarded 40 million riel (US$ 10,000), and surprisingly, an 80 million riel (US$20,000) award will be granted to any Cambodian disabled athlete receiving a gold medal in Olympic Games.

The committee has sent disabled athletes to attend the SEA Games in 12 countries since 1999 as marking 11 years of operation since its establishment in 1998. From the participation outside of home, Cambodia received 14 Gold medals, 36 silvers medals, and 17 bronze medals. (SEAW) BY TIM VUTHA
